What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an injectable dermal filler that’s been around since 1999 and has recently received FDA approval as a cosmetic and body sculpting treatment. In 2004, Sculptra received FDA approval to treat lipoatrophy, a condition resulting in facial fat loss, sunken cheeks, and deep indentations. However, the procedure’s efficacy and results soon made it a popular cosmetic procedure, receiving FDA approval to treat wrinkles and facial creases in 2014.

Sculptra is a dermal filler made of poly-L-lactic acid, an ingredient that stimulates collagen production in your body, making your skin look taut, firm, and smooth. Besides filling out wrinkles and facial creases, Sculptra is also used to add or highlight muscle definition, perform nonsurgical butt lifts and provide body contouring benefits. Since it activates your body’s natural collagen production abilities, it leads to natural-looking results that last upwards of two years.

What Does Sculptra Treat?

Sculptra is primarily used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, fine lines, and facial creases. It treats laugh lines, nasolabial folds, frown lines, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles. Sculptra is also a popular cosmetic treatment for nonsurgical butt enhancement, cellulite correction, and reducing the appearance of body wrinkles. As a popular body sculpting treatment, it’s used by people who want to create definitions around targeted muscle groups, including the glutes, pectorals, triceps, biceps, and thighs.

How Does Sculptra Work?

Collagen is an essential protein fiber that makes your skin look firm, voluminous, and youthful. Over time, your skin’s ability to produce collagen decreases, and your skin starts looking frail, thin, and wrinkled. When Sculptra is injected into the body, the poly-L-lactic acid acts as a collagen stimulator, making your body produce collagen to restore lost facial volume and fill the wrinkles and creases.

How Does Sculptra Help with Butt Enhancement?

One of Sculptra’s most popular uses is as a butt enhancement. While most butt enhancement dermal fillers inject hyaluronic acid to temporarily add volume, Sculptra encourages your body to produce its own collagen. Once injected into the dermal layers, it triggers collagen production to make your buttocks appear larger and more curvaceous. It takes several weeks or months for collagen formation, so you’ll notice the results gradually.

What to Expect from a Sculptra Procedure?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Allen Gabriel, MD, FACS, will examine your skin type and discuss your expectations, cosmetic goals, and medical history. Based on that, Dr. Gabriel will determine if you’re a suitable candidate and curate the ideal Sculptra treatment plan to address your needs.

During the Sculptra procedure, Dr. Gabriel will create a treatment map on your body, marking the strategically chosen injection sites with a pen. After cleaning and disinfecting the treatment spots, the doctor will apply topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort in the targeted regions, such as your buttocks, thighs, face, or other suitable area.

After disinfecting your skin and applying anesthesia, the doctor will start injecting Sculptra into the targeted sites. The injection process will only take a few moments, and its length is determined by your aesthetic goals and the number of treatment sites. After the injections, the doctor will apply a bandage to the treated areas.

What Happens After the Sculptra Procedure?

Most people can resume most of their daily activities immediately after the Sculptra procedure without downtime. You may experience mild swelling, bruising, and irritation on the injection sites, but these side effects will diminish soon. Follow the doctor’s postoperative recovery guidelines to ensure a smooth recovery, and avoid sunlight or tanning beds until swelling and redness have subsided.

What Are the Results of a Sculptra Procedure Like?

Sculptra doesn’t add volume by injecting a foreign component but rather encourages your body to produce more collagen. As such, the results look completely natural, but they take a short while to show up. You’ll gradually notice the procedure’s results over several weeks, and they’ll last up to two years. Dr. Gabriel may also recommend a treatment regimen consisting of three injections spaced out over several months for optimal results.
